IT ALL BEGAN WITH A LOVE GIFT from a husband, a teddy bear made for Japanese artist Rie Anahara for her birthday in 1997. As she browsed through some old scraps and pieces of cloth to create some clothes for the bear, she decided to also make a tiny bear of her own from the remnants. The result - no bigger than about 4 cm in height - was the first Ananö bear, awarded with the 1st prize at the Nasu Teddy Bear Museum Contest later in the same year.

The original bears were developed into the Ananö Café brand in 2001, and the first gift articles appeared on the market in the same year. In addition to the dolls, Rie Anahara also produces art and illustrations featuring the Ananö bears. Together with her husband, who is a graphic designer, she has also created Ananö gift books and postcards.
Since then, Rie Anahara has created a miniature world inhabited by tiny Ananö bears, slightly rugged and sometimes a bit wacky. Each bear is a unique piece of art with its own name, personality, characteristics, clothes and accessories, all created by Rie Anahara's hands and mind. The Ananö bears are cute and lovable, yet not saccharine sweet or overly sentimental - Anahara's work has a patchwork quality, combining various elements and textures that give her craft a very personal design.
New products and designs are launched in dedicated Ananö Café exhibitions held in Japan in February each year, where collectors and fans line up to get a chance to buy an original handmade piece of Anahara's art.
