Produced in 61 half-hours, Avatar - The Last Airbender is one of Nickelodeon’s top rated programs in multiple markets. In the US, it is the #1 program on Nicktoons among kids 6-11 and boys 6-11; in Sweden, it was the #1 highest rated show on Nickelodeon among boys 6-11 and the 3rd highest rated among boys 12-14 (Oct 2009-Jan 2010). Following the success, Nickelodeon has also greenlit a spin-off series, The Legend of Korra, which takes place 70 years after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender and is set to debut in 2011.
The Avatar - The Last Airbender series is based on epic storytelling, action and adventure without violence, and an original legend with a deep and well developed mythology in a fantasy world filled with limitless characters. Once in a generation comes a chosen one who has the ability to manipulate all four elements - this is the Avatar. Aang, an Airbender, has returned after being frozen for 100 years to discover he is the last of a nation. His ability to manipulate all four elements sends him on a quest to master the elements and bring balance to a war-torn world. Aided by a protective teenage Waterbender named Katara and her bull-headed brother Sokka, Aang embarks on an epic journey of self-discovery and adventure to fulfill his destiny and defeat the Fire Nation.
In addition to being a top cartoon show for boys 6-11, Avatar - The Last Airbender is also a game and publishing success. The division of elements (earth, water, fire and air) is both "toyetic" and translatable into different mediums (on-line, trading cards, games, etc.).
