130 million Garfield books have been sold worldwide through 65 publishers. Garfield comics and books are published in various parts of the world, including the Nordic countries and Poland.
Paris-based animation studio Dargaud Media has so far produced the brand new CGI-animated television series The Garfield Show in 52 x 11-minute episodes. For the first time on television, the feline icon and his friends are brought to life in HD with 3D animation. The series will open on Cartoon Network throughout Europe in 2009, with debut on free-TV channels to follow later on. The animated TV series Garfield and Friends was produced in 121 half-hours. In Plus Licens territories, the Garfield and Friends series has been released on VHS and DVD by Sunflower and SF.
Garfield live action/CGI pictures from 20th Century Fox were successfully launched worldwide in the summers of 2004 and 2006, with subsequent DVD launches.
Garfield is also a true licensing phenomenon, with $1 billion in annual worldwide retail sales. There are over 550 licensed manufacturers of Garfield products. The fat feline has also starred in several major promotional campaigns all over the world. In an international survey Garfield was regarded as one of the top 10 licensed characters for all ages worldwide!
Best known for his attitude and appetite, this cynical and sarcastic cat has been called a human in a cat suit. Garfield's favorite activities are eating, sleeping and picking on others, preferably his owner Jon and his dog pal Odie. Lasagna and coffee are two of his indispensable creature comforts!
Jim Davis, the cartoonist behind Garfield, says his creation is a composite of all the cats he remembered from his childhood all rolled into one feisty orange fur ball. Jim's own grumpy grandfather, James Garfield Davis, provided the name for the new-born character.
On June 19, 1978, the first Garfield strip was launched in 41 newspapers. Since then, the cat has grown into a huge industry. The full-service studio Paws, Inc. manages and oversees the Garfield worldwide licensing, creative, accounting, writing, and animation programs. Jim Davis remains involved in the day-to-day production and personally oversees creative and business operations.
Plus Licens represents Paws inc. for merchandising, publishing and promotional rights for Garfield in the Nordic countries, the Baltic states and Poland.
