iCarly is a live-action comedy show primarily directed to tweens 9-14 and first launched in the US in September 2007. The first TV show to feature user-generated content, the series follows Carly and her best friend Samantha as they turn a boring school assignment into a home-grown weekly web show where they can do and say whatever they want! The iCarly series is created to seamlessly connect to the online world, with plots mixed with show-within-a-show webcasts corresponding to social networks such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. "It's frantic, silly and never predictable", the Los Angeles Times noted in a recent coverage of the show's success story. Says series creator Dan Schneider: "I go online a lot, and I read stuff all the time from fans saying they love the weird stuff, the stuff that doesn't belong anywhere or make any sense".
The iCarly series show is doing very well on Nickelodeon also in Europe, being the #1 show in several territories.
The web site iCarly.com, translated into local languages also in Plus Licens territories, is not only "the show within the show" but also an actual web site that focuses on submissions and ideas from viewers and visitors. Kids can view the latest iCarly episodes, send e-mails, share experiences, give feedback and submit videos showcasing their talents or their own video clips and animated films.
The style guide for iCarly combines photographic live action art with layered graphical elements which have a digital influence. "Texting" icons reinforce the young, vibrant core values of the show, and together with the bright colour palette give a very fresh look.
Carly Shay (Miranda Cosgrove) is in many ways a typical 8th grade girl - more mature than most of her friends, but in a way that attracts people to her; a go-to voice of reason amongst her friends. She's had to grow up a little faster than her peers, since her parents are overseas in the military and she has to live with her off beat but loveable twenty-six year old brother Spencer. Carly's best friend Sam Puckett (Jennette McCurdy) is perpetually in trouble, always in the principal's office for some stunt or cheeky comment. Carly loves Sam because she's crazy, fun, unpredictable, and a good friend, and she always tries to help Sam stay out of trouble. In addition to its haphazard storytelling, the show has also been noted to avoid the traditional "lessons-learned" and "resolution wrap-up" scenes at the end of each episode.
Key values for the show:
• individuality and uniqueness - facilitating an open environment that allows children to be themselves
• DIY - do-it-yourself. Be creative, ingenious and make stuff yourself (with help from your best friends, of course!)
• friendship - the relationship between Carly, Sam and Freddy and the humor it provides is a key dynamic of the show
• technology: the latest gadgets are a key element and the web is reinforced in every episode
