The series has received excellent press endorsement in the US. LA Times has presented it as the "key new TV program of the autumn" and Hollywood Reporter describes it as an "absolutely charming" series that "offers beautiful animation that is vivid and lively".
The name Jakers! is an old Irish saying which expresses delight, surprise, amazement and excitement. Since the stories are set in rural 1950s Ireland, the phrase is a perfect sentiment for the series.
Jakers! follows Piggley Winks and his friends Dannan the Duck and Ferny the Bull through their childhood. Their hometown of Tara, and the surrounding areas, provide the safe and secure backdrop for their fertile imaginations to run riot. Whether they are fishing for the salmon of knowledge, sailing the seven seas in their pirate ship (made of hay bales!), or trying to avoid their chores, Piggley, Dannan and Ferny will find a way to turn the familiar into the utterly fantastic.
Whilst the trio busy themselves with the task ahead, Wiley the Sheep, an American import and a legend in his own mind, is busy fulfilling his "role" of bringing a little bit of sheep cool to his rural flock. Wiley's own particular humour, voiced by Mel Brooks, is a favourite with the adult audience.
The start and finish of each episode feature Piggley in the present day as a Grandpa, telling these stories of childhood escapades as entertaining lessons in life to his three very contemporary city-dwelling grandpigs. At the core of the stories is an allusion to the best forms of example storytelling such as Aesop's fables, Kipling's Jungle Book and Roald Dahl's children stories.
Jakers! is a celebration of the joys good friendship can bring while the excitement of adventure and imagination inspires kids to learn from their own experiences. The series draws upon the rich heritage of storytelling and intergenerational communication to invite children into an imaginative, diverse world and engage young viewers in adventures that teach important life lessons. The quality of the 3D creates life-like characters, richly colored and lush backgrounds and a level of acting, timing and sophistication that is rarely seen on TV.
The original concept for Jakers! was from on an idea by Denise Fitzpatrick, based on her childhood pet pig. The rights were bought by Entara and only three years thereafter, the project had transformed from little more than a pencil sketch into a sophisticated, top quality animated television series and international children's property. The series is produced by the LA based studio Mike Young Productions.
