Based on the extremely successful manga by Eiichiro Oda, the One Piece anime series has been produced in over 400 episodes since 1999. A "road movie" at sea, One Piece follows a group of pirates in search of the biggest treasure of all time, the legendary "One Piece". After eating a magic fruit, pirate boy leader Monkey D Luffy can stretch his body like rubber but no longer swim.
Publisher Shueisha has named One Piece the highest-selling manga ever. Volume 57 (March 2010) had a first print run of 3 million copies - the highest number in Japanese publishing history. The manga is now published in 28 countries with nearly 55 million copies sold outside Japan.
European television partners include Mangas, MCM, NT1 and Virgin 17 for France; RTL2, Tele 5, Animax and Junior for Germany; Jetix, Disney XD, K3 and Telecinco for Spain; Hiro, Italia 1 and Italia Teen for Italy; and Cartoon Network and Toonami for the UK. One Piece launches on Animax in Central and Eastern Europe in the fall of 2010.
Namco Bandai has released a series of One Piece video games for various platforms.
Plus Licens represents Toei for television and DVD rights to One Piece in the Nordic countries and Eastern Europe.
