The characters of the most popular comic strip of all time, Charles M. Schulz' Peanuts, first came onto television in 1965, when the animated special A Charlie Brown Christmas premiered. The Peanuts specials have received outstanding critical acclaim. In the US, the series is the longest-running and highest-rated animated specials in the history of television. The specials have also taken on more serious topics not usually tackled by cartoons, like historical events, religion and life-threatening illness, while maintaining the warm, sharp and sophisticated humor that has made the Peanuts strip a landmark in the history of comics. The piece Linus and Lucy from the musical score by composer Vince Guaraldi has become a signature theme song for Peanuts.

Dealing with all the anxieties and joys of childhood, the children of Peanuts may appear to live rather ordinary lives in American surburbia. They go to school, they play games and sports, they celebrate holidays and fall in and out of love with each other. But there's more than this to the picture! All the human characters are very strong personalities - and then there’s Snoopy, the imaginative beagle who can bring truly amazing adventures to life in an everyday backyard.

Peanuts animation is also seen in the eight-episode TV miniseries This is America, Charlie Brown (1988-89) as well as the Saturday morning cartoon The Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show (1983-86).
